As the sister bar and restaurant to one of our favourite dining destinations in Bali, Sarong, there were always going to be great expectations for Mama San. Opened in late 2011, Mama San took a detour from the usual beachside bar brigade and set up on a main street in Kerobokan, up the road from the many fashionable boutiques of Seminyak, and it quickly established itself as a go-to for those trendy locals and savvy visitors looking for a sophisticated night out.
The decor at Mama San makes it feel like you’re stepping into colonial shanghai during the 1920s, complete with mah-jong tables and leather chesterfields. Huge modern Asian art adorn the walls and there’s a dimly lit ambience that provides a suitably stylish backdrop to the amazing Pan-Asian food being offered up. And, much like Sarong, the drinks are just as impressive and classic with a twist. Start your night out with a cocktail at the bar upstairs and melt into the chilled vibe before heading downstairs for a meal in the restaurant. And when the food has been devoured and the beats begin, stick around to partake in the club-like atmosphere that kicks off.
There’s never any shortage of fabulous places to eat and drink at while in Bali. But make like the locals and get yourself to Mama San one night. Chances are, you’ll be back for more.
