It was a wild and windy wet morning when we set off for the flight to Sydney with one day to hit the much hyped – and much coveted! – stash at Life Instyle! Flights were delayed, too many layers of scarves were applied for an end of summer sojourn (seriously!) until touch down in a surprisingly sunny Sydney, where we hit the ground running to Hordern Pavilion. The loss of time didn’t dampen our enthusiasm once inside the doors though, as we were greeted with an absolute treasure trove of Australian design goodness.
Let me say with no exaggeration, we’re a very design savvy bunch. Australian design is in very, very good hands! Our favourite peeps had converged under the one roof to show their wares, tout their talents and take some serious orders. It was great to see some faces we’ve grown to love, and discover some new delights to share with you in the coming weeks and months. Here’s a little snippet of some of our favourite finds from some cool shops and fantastic designers. The lust list has grown substantially!
Dynamic Sydney duo Jane Frosh and Lucy Weight from Cool Edies took over the Style Lab this year, offering up a different styled scene every day. And we were all over the use of traditional Chinese joss paper as a feature wall shown at day two’s ‘room’ (that’s the results, pictured above – don’t you love?). Fab DIY, coming at ya!
Pony Rider has us hooked with their latest release of printed bed covers, some swoon worthy cushions and textiles (above), while The Dharma Door (below) was a great show of ethical and stylish decor and lifestyle design goods. The sturdy striped jute oversized baskets were a firm favourite, as were the striped shoulder bags with pom pom trim (we’re a bit obsessed with them!).
The Ourlieu stand had one of the largest continual crowds we saw the whole day. Jai Vasicek from Ahoy Trader has teamed with designer Lauri Elkins on a fab range of cushions and it’s a collaboration made in hipster’s heaven. We’re loving the new cushions featuring his trademark “You, Me & The Sea” tag. The whole Ourlieu collection is more than a little to–die-for! We were also coveting the old-school macrame plant hangers pictured down below by Bohe, which were perfect hung against Jai’s stunning tiled wall murals (we hear they are available through Ahoy).
Have You Met Miss Jones? Cos we have, and we fell madly in love with her whimsical porcelein tableware and creatures that light up, and the equally delightful ceramics and decorative objects on display. That’s them popping up below. They’re a little bit retro, slightly quirky, and totally cool.
Nancybird is a Melbourne based accessories label that does some divine fashions and jewellery as well as these gorgeous cushions in textiles (below) that are so on-trend!
Maybe it’s the inner child in us, but we were instantly drawn to the decorative metal typo signs, forest creatures and tongue-in-cheek touches (hello pom pom feature wall!) at the Down to the Woods stand. Loved every bit of it!
Seletti brought a dose of design glamour to our afternoon – and these gold ‘Keytlery’ had us deep breathing. Want them. Need them …
And we can always count on Bonnie and Neil to up the wow factor! Their latest release of table ware, textiles, cushions and decor (below) was nothing short of a show stopper. ‘Nuff said …
Life Instyle is set to hit Melbourne next from 1st – 4th August 2013, and we’ll be there hunting down more design booty no doubt. Like we needed any excuse for a weekend in Melbourne, right?
