Canadian Australian artist Carmel Debreuil may have married a rockstar (Joe Hansen, bass player from Grinspoon, that would be) and cites her painting schedule as “at least five days a week unless I’m child wrangling or sneaking drinks from the band’s rider backstage.” But take a look at her paintings and they are more whimsy than rock’n’roll. With a cast of children inspired by “bravado, nonchalance and the swagger of youth”, there’s a delightful joy and childlike curiosity.
“I see kids as these amazing creatures that are perfectly imperfect,” says Carmel. “Everyone seems to be in a rush to guide kids into adulthood and responsibility, but I’m happy if they want to hang out with a giant squirrel while wearing a Viking helmet and cowboy boots. I think it’s an amazing time and quite funny!”
Carmel just had a great solo exhibition at the Brisbane Modern Art Gallery this past June, but she also creates works for private sales and commissions. She’s made it on to the Design Pilgrim LUST LIST in the Spring 2014 issue of Queensland Homes magazine, out now!
